The Bund, located along the Huangpu River in Huangpu District, Shanghai, is a historic and cultural neighborhood in China. From 1844 (the 24th year of Emperor Daoguang's reign in the Qing Dynasty), this area of the Bund was designated as a British concession, becoming a true portrayal of Shanghai's bustling commercial district and the starting point of the old Shanghai concession area and the modern urban development of the entire city.
The Bund stretches 1.5 kilometers, starting from Yan'an East Road in the south and ending at Garden Bridge over the Suzhou River in the north. It borders the Huangpu River on the east and was once the concentration of old Shanghai's financial and foreign trade institutions on the west. After Shanghai was opened as a commercial port, foreign banks, businesses, clubs, and newspapers began to gather here, making the Bund the financial center of China and even the Far East. In August 1943 (the 32nd year of the Republic of China), the Bund was returned to the Wang Jingwei puppet regime along with the Shanghai International Settlement, ending the century-long concession period. In 1945 (the 34th year of the Republic of China), it was officially named Zhongshan Dongyi Road.
The Bund is lined with 52 classically revived buildings of various styles, earning it the nickname "The Bund International Architecture Exhibition." It is an important historic site and representative building of modern China and one of Shanghai's landmarks. In November 1996, the State Council of the People's Republic of China listed it as the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
